The original album version of 'Messages' was due to be used. However, Andy objected to this version and wanted to re-record the song. The 10,000 copies cut with the original mix were scrapped and a new, radically different version was recorded under the control of producer Mike Howlett.

Howlett introduced the idea for a new intro featuring a speeded organ chord going from low to high, overlaying one playing high to low. Then they recorded a cymbal, reversed it and added it to the mix. With the addition of a new bass line by Howlett the song was radically different from the original album version.

'Taking Sides Again' is an instrumental 'dub'version of 'Messages'.

Some releases featured a pale blue label.

'Messages' was also used as the title for the 1988 biography of the band and was the original working title for The Best Of OMD album released the same year.
